Over time, cedar fencing will turn gray from the dirt and weather, so it’s important that you maintain your fence in the best way possible. Here’s how.
With a Power Washer
The best way to maintain your cedar fence is with a power washer. With a pressure of 1,500 to 2,00 pounds per square inch, you won’t damage the wood.Keep the nozzle 18 inches from the fence surface and move the spray evenly over the fence. Do your best not to linger too long in one area. It’s important to note that cedar is a soft wood, and if the pressure washing isn’t done correctly it can damage your fence.
With a Garden Hose & Bucket
If you don’t have a power washer, combine 3 quarts of warm water and 1 quart of oxygen bleach in a large bucket. Spray the solution on the fence with a garden sprayer and allow the solution to sit for 10 minutes. Scrub the fence with a brush to remove mildew and dirt and then rinse the fence with clean water when you’re finished.
With Your Eyes
Take a walk around the perimeter of your fence and inspect it for any loose posts or problem sections. Check for any loose nails, or areas that look like they’ve been damaged by weather (or even the dog).
With a Sealant
Brush a coat of sealant evenly over the entirety of the fence. Allow the sealant to dry and apply a second coat. It’s important to reapply the sealant every 3 years. Wash the fence and allow it to dry completely before applying it a second time.
