Choosing Between a Wood or Vinyl Privacy Fence

Choosing Between a Wood or Vinyl Privacy Fence

Find out whether you should go with a wood or vinyl privacy fence.

If you’re thinking about installing a new privacy fence or considering replacing an old one you have, what material do you think would be best for constructing your new fence? Many people lean towards wood and vinyl when building privacy fences, but choosing between the two isn’t easy. That’s why we’ll break down the differences between each type of fencing to give you a better idea of which will be more suitable for your home. Find out whether you should go with a wood or vinyl privacy fence.

Durability

A wooden privacy fence is likely to last up to 20 years with proper care. The problem is that it can break down over time, meaning you’ll have to monitor your fence to make sure it’s in good shape. Also, the lifespan of your fence will vary depending on the type of wood you use.

A vinyl privacy fence, on the other hand, is made from synthetic material, so it won’t fall apart over time. They can also last even when staring down weather conditions such as rain and humidity.

Maintenance

If you opt for a wooden privacy fence, you’ll need to treat and stain it at least one time every year so that it won’t rot and so you get the best aesthetic for your fence. The result is a glamorous and aesthetically pleasing fence, but it will take a significant amount of money and energy to get to that point. You’ll also have to deal with termites and other pests that might eat away at your fence. If you don’t keep those pests in check, you may be replacing your fence sooner than you’d like.

With a vinyl privacy fence, you have nearly no maintenance to handle. All you need to do is hose your fence off once in a while to retain its cleanliness. Rain will often do most of the work for you, washing away a majority of the dirt and grime that accumulates on your fence.

Cost

A wooden privacy fence will cost less upfront than a vinyl fence. However, there are plenty of additional expenses that will accumulate throughout your fence’s lifespan. The larger the fence, the more quickly those expenses will rise. This means a wood privacy fence is better for a smaller area, like a tiny garden.

While a vinyl privacy fence will cost more initially than a wooden one, it will end up costing less long-term. Vinyl fences are better if you plan on staying where you live for a long time because you won’t have expenses that steadily pile up over the years. If you use a vinyl fence, once the installation is complete, you’ll be good to go.
