Outdoor decking has become more desirable among homeowners in recent years. They do wonders to bolster your home’s appearance and monetary value, making them among the most popular hardscape features among homeowners. However, it isn’t as simple as having someone come over and install your deck. You have to decide on decking material, and there are many materials worth your consideration. For this reason, we’ll go over a few different varieties of decking material so you can determine which will be best for you.
Treated Decking
Treated decks have a low initial cost, which can help homeowners who are worried about their budgetary constraints. However, these decks come with hidden maintenance expenses that you’ll need to think about. You’ll either have to paint, stain, or seal your deck, meaning you’ll need to hire staff to handle the task for you. These decks need this done anywhere between 2 weeks to 6 months.
You’ll also have to power wash your treated decking annually prior to restaining it. This will require you to either have someone come over and wash it for you or rent one, which can cost anywhere from $35- $150 depending on the washer you choose. These decks tend to last between 10 and 15 years, depending on how well you care for them.
Cedar Decking
Cedar decks are more resistant to insects than other decks, and can also resist rot better. Cedar decking also has a captivating look to it that can help sell your home down the road. Be cautious, though, because these decks will show wear and tear if they take enough damage. They also need to be stained and sealed once per year. Expect these decks to last between 15 and 20 years.
Composite Decking
Composite decks have a higher initial cost than other decks. However, you get your money’s worth if you invest in one. They are incredibly durable and can even mimic the look of other decks, such as wooden varieties. They are made out of recycled materials, making them an environmentally friendly option. On top of that, composite decks are capped on either three or four of their sides, which keeps them from fading and staining. This helps you keep that gorgeous appearance long after you’ve had your deck installed. Most composite decks come with warranties for decay, splintering, and rotting. These warranties could cover damage for up to 25 years.
