Figuring Out the Best Size For Your Decking

Figuring Out the Best Size For Your Decking

Here are a few factors that can help you figure out the best size for your decking.

The size of your decking significantly impacts how you will utilize your outdoor living space. The size of your deck comes down to factors such as how you’d like your yard to function and how much of your yard you’re willing to maintain. It’s always best to choose your decking carefully because it’s frustrating to discover that it’s not an optimal fit for your yard. Here are a few factors that can help you figure out the best size for your decking.

Decking: What’s the Average Size?

Typically, decks are wider than deeper, and the larger portion of the deck runs alongside the house. On average, decks are between 300-400 feet. Multi-level decks also exist, adding more space and dimension to your home. Hiring us to build the first level is an excellent idea if this unique deck isn’t within your budget. Then, we can add on additional levels later. However, keep these additions in mind during the initial construction process.

Your Home’s Size

A deck design rule of thumb to keep in mind is that your decking should be no larger than 20% of your home’s square footage. Why? The goal is to keep your home aesthetically balanced. In other words, you don’t want overwhelming visuals. However, one benefit of an oversized deck is that you’ll have less grass to mow!

Codes, Regulations, and Permits

As with any building project, you’ll need to obtain a permit before the construction begins. Check local building codes, regulations, and restrictions. Look into your Homeowners Association rules if applicable. It’s also best to consider that lot restrictions may limit your deck’s proximity to a neighbor’s property. Also, it can impact how far your deck can extend if there is a septic tank, well, or drain field on your property.

Zoning

An outdoor living space can have endless, creative options. If you’d prefer many landscape and hardscape features in your yard, a smaller deck won’t overpower these additions. Zoning or transitioning refers to other elements incorporated into a yard, such as gardens or pathways. You might even decide to add a fence to your backyard. If this is the case, you want all of these elements to blend into your yard seamlessly.

Best-Sized Decking Used as an Entertainment Hub

If you love hosting gatherings and know that you will use your deck for entertainment, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do I love to cook outdoors? If so, would you prefer a small grill or large kitchen area with the works (refrigerator, sink, and counter space)
  2. Will you watch movies on your deck? If “yes,” how much outdoor seating will you need?
  3. Will you add a hot tub to your deck?

These size and dimension rules will make a difference:

  • For small grills and patio sets, you need 144 square feet to fit 4-6 people comfortably
  • For 10-12 people, you’ll need at least 288 feet
  • If you want the most breathing room, 392 feet is an excellent size

The Shape

Some homeowners prefer their decking to be traditionally boxy, square, or rectangular. However, contractors can creatively curve decks to fit into irregular spaces. They can also construct a mix of straight and curved lines so that a deck adds unique curb appeal.
