Here are some big clues that your vinyl fence needs to be repaired this spring.
Winter is on its way out, and you know what that means! Spring is the season of making changes and doing repairs, especially for outdoor areas around your home. Sometimes this involves simple (or not so simple) gardening or landscaping projects. Other times, someone might want to have a new deck installed. But one of the most common springtime projects is to replace or repair the fence around your property. But how do you know that it is time to make repairs? Here are some big clues that your vinyl fence needs to be repaired this spring.
There’s Visible Damage
One of the most obvious signs that you need to repair your vinyl fence is if there is obvious damage. If you’ve had some big storms blow through or a tree has come down, you will need to repair whatever was broken or damaged on the fence. The longer you wait to do this, the worse it will get. Sure there is some damage that isn’t too much of a problem, but in most cases, the initial damage just opens the way to greater damage over time. If rather than damage, what you’re noticing is discoloration, that is a slightly different matter. Most vinyl that gets discolored is the result of algae growth. The algae is an eyesore but it won’t do much damage to your actual fence. Putting off cleaning it may make it more difficult to clean off later, however, so it is best to jump on that task as quickly as possible.
The Fence Is In Contact With The Ground
One slightly less obvious clue that you need to repair your vinyl fence is if it is in contact with the soil. Clearly this doesn’t apply to the fence posts, which are sunk into the ground and always in contact with the soil. The rails, or panels of the fence, however, should not sit on the ground. If the fence is properly installed, there should be a small but mostly consistent gap running along the bottom. If that gap was there but is disappearing, it could be a sign of a larger problem with your fence. Alternatively, it could be a sign of changes with your soil. If the ground is shifting for some reason, it could be causing the gap to appear to change.
Parts Are Loose (Or Noisy)
Finally, if there are any parts of the fence that wiggle or are loose, you should repair them. Likewise, if the hinges on the gates are squeaky, creaky, or otherwise noisy, it is a sign that you are skipping some important maintenance.
