The Picket Fence: An American Classic

The white picket fence is a staple of American suburbia.

It’s a late summer’s afternoon. The wind blows lazily over you as you sit outside watching your kids walk up the driveway, their faces happy with the first day of school. You sit outside and pass the lemonade around the table as the dog chases butterflies around the yard. She barks. The neighbors walk past with their golden retriever, a curious pup. They sniff each other in between the divisions of the picket fence. You exchange smiles and waves and they continue to walk on, curious pup and all.

Your picket fence isn’t just keeping your dog close to home but is maintaining an American tradition dating back to the earliest colonial era. A symbol of the ideal middle-class suburban life, the picket fence remains an American classic.

The Original Picket Fence

“Say – I’m going in a-swimming, I am. Don’t you wish you could? But of course you’d rather work – wouldn’t you? Course you would!”
Tom contemplated the boy a bit, and said:
“What do you call work?”
“Why, ain’t that work?”
Tom resumed his whitewashing, and answered carelessly:
“Well, maybe it is, and maybe it ain’t. All I know, is, it suits Tom Sawyer.”

Picket Fences were particularly popular in the earliest colonial era. Traditionally they were painted white or whitewashed and young boys were given this chore as depicted in Mark Twain’s classic story. They were decorative ways to contain pets and children without blocking views, and a symbol of social status. The white picket fence that wrapped around one’s house established their household as a financially stable one.

Symbolism

The white picket fence is a symbol of the ultimate American dream. The classic suburban concept was a dream of many, and most families saw the picket fence as a way of achieving that. The white picket fence has also received ironic attention such as in the opening scene of David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” when the suburban family is revealed as a bug-ridden façade.

The picket fence reigns supreme today as a tasteful way to your home and children safe. The once whitewashed fences are now widely available in polyvinyl chloride, and can be installed by the professionals at Albaugh and Son today.
