At Albaugh & Sons, we’ll help you through every step of the fence installation process. If you’ve got some questions about how it works, we’re here to help. Before getting a fence installed, there are a few things you must do. You might be ready to get your privacy fence up and functioning, but being sure to follow all of the necessary codes will save you from headaches and money waste.
Property Lines
Got your dream fence in mind? Great! But before you go making any purchases or trying DIY fence installation, you need to know where your property line is located. Your fence can be installed right up to that property line, but if you go over it, you run the risk of your neighbors asking you to take it down–costing you a lot of money. If you’re unsure of where your property line actually is, check your mortgage papers and see if a survey was filed. It could have also been filed with your city. If you’ve tried all of those options without luck, you may need to hire a surveyor.
Building Permits and Codes
Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how badly you need your fence if you don’t follow codes and get the right permits. Check with your city or town to see if you need a building permit–building without one will be a costly waste of time. Depending on the type of lot you own, there are different allowances for how tall your fence can be. It’s pretty typical for 6’ to be the maximum height for backyard fences. Front yard fences are typically 4’ in height. Check with your city first!
Checking for Utilities
Checking for utility lines before you begin building is necessary. You don’t want to damage anything that’s underground, so make sure you make the proper arrangements to get your utility lines marked out. Be sure to ask a ton of questions–you’ll want to make sure your professional fence installation is done right, and that there will be no issues after they’re done building.
