Over the next several weeks, we are going to offer a little insight to help make your next residential painting project go a little smoother. So far we have touched on different kinds of paint and how to prepare an area for painting. This week, we are finally going to talk about how to paint a room.
Week 3: How to Paint a Room
Once you’ve chosen the right paint, picked out your colors, and prepared the area, it’s finally time to start painting.
- Cut In: Start by cutting in around the edges using a 2.5-inch trim brush. Alternate between cutting in a section of the wall (or ceiling) and painting the rest of the section to maintain a wet edge. This will help prevent streaking and visible lines between the cut-in area and the rest of the painted surface.
- The Ceiling: Unless you want to also paint the top of your head or even your face, be sure to remove excess paint on the roller by slowly rolling it back and forth on the ridges of the paint tray. Then, start painting. Roll in a motion across your body to avoid straining your neck and back.
- The Walls: Roll using a three-by-three-foot “W” pattern. Fill it in without lifting the brush. And only paint one wall at a time.
- The Trim: Once the walls have dried, apply painter’s tape where the trim meets the wall. Then, using a two-inch angled brush, paint the moldings, baseboard, and door and window frames. Start at the top and work your way down so you can more easily address drips and runs as they happen.
