Secure Your Wood Fence From the Cold

Are you preparing for winter?

The temperature continues to drop here in Maryland. As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, the mornings continue to get colder and the nights continue to get darker. Winter is certainly approaching which means that all you homeowners out there need to take a few preventative measures before curling up with a blanket and a cup of hot chocolate at the end of the day. If you’re the owner of a wood fence, read on to learn more about how to care for your fence!

Trim Your Limbs

The trees that hang over the top of your fence can become loose during a rainstorm or after heavy snowfall. If these limbs break and fall, they can cause serious damage to your fence and other parts of your property. Before the first snowfall, take a walk around your yard and identify any problem limbs or dead trees. Trim your branches back before the winter ever starts. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on the situation throughout the winter months just in case.

A Stained Fence is a Happy Fence

Staining your fence creates an attractive aesthetic, but is also is a great way to prevent moisture build up. Winter snow exposes your wooden fence to excess moisture, and your fence isn’t able to dry out as effectively due to the low temperatures. However, good oil based stain on your fence before winter will protect your fence from the dangers of excess moisture such as mold, mildew, and rot.

Assess any Current Issues

Take a walk around the perimeter of your fence and check for any potential issues in the boards and panels. By looking out for warning signs, you’ll prevent many problems from ever happening! Check for loose boards. Even if they don’t appear to be a problem now, the issue could become more severe as the ground swells from frost and ice. Have you noticed any knots in your wood fence? These knots expand in warmer weather and contract during the cooler seasons, so sometimes they fall out and leave a small or large hole. Use a wood gap filler to fill these holes as soon as you notice them as a way to prevent birds or bugs from moving in!
